Mary Pat Ettinger

Artist’s Statement

I am a landscape artist working professionally in acrylics for over 40 years gaining entry to national and international shows. Transitioning from oils in the early 70s, I began my passionate journey in landscapes on canvas in a watercolor style. Working both plein air and in the studio, I find the interaction between canvas and paint intriguing.

My unique style provides me with an incredible challenge, as acrylics dry quickly and are fairly impervious to change after drying. I love the careful edges created on the ‘raw’ canvas, and yet am invigorated by the spontaneous and unpredictable flows of color that I get as I lay in my wet washes. It is a joy to work in this stimulating artistic process that challenges me with its sometimes impulsive and arbitrary behavior.

Currently, besides painting for galleries and commissions, I am working on a project titled “Fence Me In”, featuring paintings of the farm and ranch land fencing and rural boundaries we see all around us in our amazing western landscape. I am also embarking on new turf as I begin a series from Morelia, Michoacán in Mexico. I have visited family in this area for almost 40 years now, and have a wealth of sketches that I am anxious to put on canvas.

Aside from my landscape painting, I write and illustrate adult and children’s books. I am currently working on a children’s book about the amazing Ute woman, Chipeta, who was instrumental in peacefully leading her people after her husband’s death. Additionally, Portal Publications, LTD, and Crown Point Graphics have published my illustration work which they put out in the retail market.

I love what I have been gifted to do. It amazes me that I am allowed to paint and illustrate the beautiful land in which we live. I am grateful that my work enriches the lives of others. May it continue to do so.

In addition to painting, I am passionate about teaching workshops that encourage others with my expertise and enthusiasm.

“The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.” —Pablo Picasso

About the Artist

Mary Pat Ettinger first studied with an Italian artist in her teen years before going on to study at Laguna Beach School of Art and Design and Chapman College of Orange.

Mary Pat works both plein air and in the studio, expressing the loveliness of the landscape and the intimacy of man’s life in that setting.

In addition to painting, Mary Pat spent 20 years as a creator and designer for museum exhibits. She is the author of two books and has illustrated for various periodicals and books. Portal Publications and Crown Point Graphics have published her illustrations for the retail market.
