To paint beautiful paintings beautifully is part of my purpose, but it doesn't completely satisfy the goal. Those things that speak to my heart are: the beauty of a sunset; the way a road winds to somewhere; frozen droplets on a tree limbs; the grace of living creatures; a rolling vista; the charm and mystery of a house; the spirit in a tree. Shapes, colors, and atmospheres in relationship to the environment all convey s hidden message.
The Little Prince comments that the essence of things can only be seen with the heart. So my goal is to play down the obvious and seek the ineffable essence existing in the heart of a subject. Yet to get beyond just what a place looks like to its essence is a challenge. There is a hidden path somewhere, sort of similar to the one that exists between the primitive brain and the nervous system. Someday, I hope to find it.
